Sunday evening, hubby and I went to visit the cemetery in his hometown, where many of his relatives have been laid to rest. He grew up in "small town USA" and his paternal family ties go back to the late 1800's. This is where his great grandparents, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins are 'resting'.
We remember his uncle Stanley this Memorial Day who, at 18 years old, while serving our country in WWII, gave his life on Iwo Jima.
After visiting the cemetery, we went to a memorial site where Stanley is honored.
In 1955, the VFW created this memorial to honor the local high school students who gave their lives in WWII and the Korean War. It is located at the old high school (now middle school) sports field.
On this Memorial Day, let us remember all those who have given their lives while serving our country. It is because of them, we are able to enjoy the freedom we do!
