Flea Market Finds

Last weekend while we were up at Whidbey, I managed to do a little shopping on Saturday. First stop was at a flea market that a local antique mall hosts a few times each summer. It's pretty small, but I always happen to find something and at a great price too!
After the market, we hit a couple garage sales and didn't find one thing to buy...
Next stop was the annual antique show at the fair grounds. Although this show is always a bit pricey, I still found a couple things to bring home.

A Day For Remembering

Sunday evening, hubby and I went to visit the cemetery in his hometown, where many of his relatives have been laid to rest. He grew up in "small town USA" and his paternal family ties go back to the late 1800's. This is where his great grandparents, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins are 'resting'.
We remember his uncle Stanley this Memorial Day who, at 18 years old, while serving our country in WWII, gave his life on Iwo Jima.
After visiting the cemetery, we went to a memorial site where Stanley is honored.
In 1955, the VFW created this memorial to honor the local high school students who gave their lives in WWII and the Korean War. It is located at the old high school (now middle school) sports field. On this Memorial Day, let us remember all those who have given their lives while serving our country. It is because of them, we are able to enjoy the freedom we do!

This Weeks Projects

I've been doing a little of this and that this week. A couple projects started because we cleaned out the garage last Saturday. The first project - this table. I brought it home from the beach house last summer. It was my grandparents, from the 30's. It hasn't been used for a very long time - and I think it's time for meals to be served on once again. I'm still debating whether I want to paint it or not... Next up, the rocker I purchased for a buck last summer. I've put on the primer coat and now it's ready to be painted. It'll have a cute new cushion when it's done too...
And oh yeah, I gotta show you my new friend. No need to spend so much time sanding before painting, this primer is a fantastic!
Beside prepping for paint, I made up a couple teacher gifts, and
since we had a shower at church for my soon to be niece-in-law, I made her an apron keeping her wedding and kitchen colors in mind.
With a bit of the leftover material, I gussied up some kitchen towels for her too. I made one other thing this week for the 3rd Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway on May 30th. I just have a couple more things to pull together before I can post about it, so stay tuned...

My Favorite Tree

May is a beautiful month here in the Pacific Northwest. I love how green and lush it is around here. I wanted to share a pic of my favorite tree. If you're looking to plant a tree in your yard, I highly recommend a Katsura. They make a wonderful shade tree for the Summer, and display beautiful colors in the Fall. I love the heart shaped leaves and how they appear to be hanging in mid air. When the leaves change in the Fall, they give off a cotton candy like scent.
It's really yummy!

If I Was Going To Prom Today...

...this is the dress I'd be wearing!
I picked up this beauty last week, while antiquing.
I'm in love with all the vintage 50's fluff and frills.
It is quite different from the dress I wore to my prom in 1988. Check out all the sequins and lame', not to mention the bubble skirt!
Even though my designer dress was featured in the magazines, I think my current taste is much better, don't you?

"Something New" For Our Front Door

Our front door has been is dire need for something new to hang on it. Today, I made that "something new", a flower basket/bag using scraps of vintage tablecloths to hang and hold fresh flowers.
I also added a plastic rectangle container which fits perfectly inside the bag to hold water. It's already filled with flowers since we have many rhododendron's blooming right now.
Ahhh... I love this time of year!!!

I Have A Hard Time Letting Go...

... of things from my childhood.
Like for instance, the bunk beds I slept in every summer at our beach cabin. Recently, my parents purchased new bunks for the beach house. I couldn't handle seeing the old beds go away for good. I had a plan! Take these pieces...
...and turn 'em into something we could use now.
I can always use a bench. Thankfully my sweet hubby can build things that are structurally safe to sit in. I don't think anyone would want to sit in it, if I would have put it together, me included!
I'm thinking a cute little table would look charming with the bench. I do have one head and foot board left to make something with.... Umm, HONEY!!!!

Yay! The Lilacs Are Blooming...

...just in time for Mother's Day! Definitely one of my most favorite flowers and fragrance.
I've been painting some furniture the last couple of days. On Wednesday, I picked up this little table at a thrift store for $2.99. We had the chairs, but everything needed to be painted to coordinate together. Sydney picked out the white plastic pitcher at the thrift store to use as a vase, and I hemmed up a remnant of fabric for the tablecloth. We cut some lilacs for the centerpiece, and now both girls are busy setting up for a tea party in their newly decorated house.
I better be invited... hehe

It All Started With This...

...little vase. A number of years ago, I was given this charming vase for a gift. I immediately fell in love, and so began my love affair with German elfinware.
What I love best are the applied roses! My favorite pieces to collect are perfume bottles, open salts, place card holders, vases, and trinket boxes.
The newest addition to my collection is this sweet trinket box given to me by my sister-in-law. Her grandma recently passed away, and when they were going through her things, she spotted the box and thought it looked like something I might like.
My sister-in-law knows me so well. I love it!

Tissue Paper Fluff

I've been wanting to make tissue paper pom pom's for a long time...
and since I'm hosting a bridal shower on Sunday afternoon, for my soon to be niece-in-law, I thought decorating with pom pom's would add just the right touch. Aren't they pretty?!
They are addicting to make and so easy too - I want to hang pom pom's everywhere now!
If you're interested in making your own, click here for the instructions that I followed.
I bet you can't just make one. heeheehee
